Frank Carlsen Chapel

Completion date: Phase 1 - Summer 2006
Phase 2 - Pending

Since the summer of 1951, the Frank Carlsen Chapel has sat atop the hill above Kresge Village.
A memorial to Frank Carlsen, a founding partner of Camp Lael, it began as a humble building in Detroit. It was moved onto the site, and it still a integral part of our program, some 50+ years later.
Phase 1:
Though donations and offerings taken at the Metro Detroit Area (formerly Southeast Area) Annual Gathering, a portion of the work was completed during the Summer of 2006.
  • The existing single-pane windows were replaced with thermal windows.
  • Existing wood doors replaced with steel.
  • Removal of landscaping.
  • Painting of the exterior
Phase 2:
Still some work needs to be completed on the chapel so that it can viably be a part of our program for many years to come.
  • Foundation work to stop the sagging floor.
  • A new roof is needed.
  • A furnace is needed as well to make it more accessible in the winter months. Air conditioning will also be installed.
  • Installation of a ramp to make the chapel handicap accessible.
